Feedback Explained
Feedback Explained
As we get further into our study of feedback, please watch the TED Talk below for some insight about giving effective feedback.
Take-aways from the video:
- the Micro-Yes: start by asking if the person is open to feedback. It lets them know feedback is coming and allows them to consent and feel more control over the situation.
- Data-Point: avoid "blur words" and unclear reasons for the feedback. Convert your observations into data points with some specificity as to what happened and when.
- Show Impact: Explain to the person the impact of what they did. What was the outcome of their action?
- End on a question: Ask the person what they think should be done or how they see the situation so that solving the problem is a collaborative process rather than a passively-received directive.
Take a few minutes to think about times you've received or given feedback. Have you ever seen these tips used to deliver feedback? Please feel free to share examples in the comments below!
