Social Identities
When we talk about valuing people and making people feel included, we are operating through the lens of social identities.
These social groups – whether visible (like race) or invisible (like religion or ability) impact how we walk in the world; and how other people perceive us.
These identities can shift. These identities can make us feel pride or make us feel isolated. As we enter the workforce it’s important to be mindful of our various identities and aware of the power and privilege afforded by those identities.
It’s also important for each us to be open to the many identities you may learn about as you navigate diverse work environments.
Social identity groups are based on the physical, social, and mental characteristics of individuals.
Some of these identities can be highly visible opposed to others that are hidden.
Take a minute to think about how you identify for each of these groups, and go to the next page when you're ready for the next activity. It will take slightly longer, so feel free to take a break between this and the next activity. We'll remind you before you start too!
