Virtual Boundaries

Setting Virtual Boundaries

Technological progress has blurred the lines between our working and private lives. Now more than every we need to establish clear workplace boundaries. While all the best practices we can apply to the virtual/at-home workplace, there are few things we want to emphasize for those of us working remotely.

  • Establish a start and end time – this may be 9-5 because that’s when you’re expected to be logged on. For more flexible roles you might able to determine a different schedule. Create a schedule that allows you to thrive in your strengths (ex. 10-6 or 12-8pm)
  • Make Reminders to Stretch / Move Locations
  • Set random blocks in your calendar for actual breaks: schedule your naps!
  • You deserve lunch. Each Lunch (not at your desk)
  • Can that Slack/Email wait for the morning? If so, let it?
  • Done for the Day? Put the work computer away.

Understanding Your Capacity

Have you heard the term capacity used in the workplace? You can find a definition in the image below:

Capacity, noun. 1. The maximum amount that something can contain. 2. The amount that something can produce.

Remember: Capacity is Different from your capabilities. You were hired because of your skillsets, your capabilities. CAPACITY is about how much you can hold, contain, produce--given everything that’s on your plate.

When we're aware of our capacity we can be more intentional about where/how to focus our energy

When we are unaware we can unconsciously cause harm to ourselves and/or others.
