Understanding Power
Understanding Power
To understand power dynamics, we must first understand power. Power shows up in a workplace often, which is why power dynamics exist. All power is not bad—but understanding how and when individuals utilize power will help understand what power dynamics are at play. Understanding certain types of power help identify issues of conflict.
- Anyone in a workplace can have power. Anyone who has influence or capacity to make decisions or control outcomes has a sense of power.
- Power can show up and look differently depending on the environment or the type of power that one exerts.
Power Within - Empowerment
This type of power is related to an individual’s self-worth and understanding of their power and contribution. Empowerment is a valuable tool and skill in the workplace. It can help you understand the value you bring to a space and the value that others bring to the workspace as well.
Power within helps us recognize individual differences, have respect for others and their differences, and helps us believe we can make a difference.
